Hold on! It’s almost time to book your Mean Girls movie tickets. Since its 2004 debut, the movie has garnered a fan base, sparking the creation of a Broadway musical. After being a super hit, the show is making its way to the big screen as a cinematic masterpiece. Despite two decades passing since the original movie’s release, the excitement stands at an all-time high for the 2024 musical adaptation.
The Musical Plot Unfolds
Like the 2004 one, the upcoming Mean Girls musical movie also centers on Cady Heron. After growing up on the African savanna, she moves to Illinois with her parents, starting a new high school in the suburbs. Cady goes above and beyond to fit in with The Plastics, North Shore High’s most popular trio, which is led by none other than Regina George, the queen bee.
That being said, given that it is an adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical, a significant portion of the dialogue and story advancement will take place through music. Tina Fey is the author of all three Mean Girls adaptations: the stage, movie, and musical. This new musical version will be helmed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne, with co-production from Lorne Michaels. During her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Fey shared that the music in the movie will be far more “pop” than that in the musical.
The First Full Trailer
“This is not your mother’s Mean Girls,” opens the first full teaser, which is set to Olivia Rodrigo’s song “Get Him Back!” The first things seen in the complete trailer are the reappearance of the bright pink Burn Book, the best friend tune continues to ring between Damian and Janis, Cady getting awkward in front of Aaron Samuels, the catastrophic performance of “Jingle Bell Rock” at the Winter Talent Show, and Regina’s famous line, “Get in, loser.” Regina can also be seen donning the now-famous “R” initial necklace. The only thing missing is the 2004 movie’s original soundtrack.
A Star-Studded Cast
The Australian actress, Angourie Rice, is playing Cady Heron, the main cast member of the Mean Girls musical movie. Jaquel Spivey, the Broadway star nominated for a Tony and Grammy, and Auli’i Cravalho, the Disney princess Moana, will play Damian and Janis, respectively.
A former cast member of Sex Lives of College Girls, Reneé Rapp, will fill Regina George’s position on The Plastics side once again. She previously played the part on Broadway. With her, Avantika Vandanapu will star as Karen and Bebe Wood from Love, Victor will play Gretchen to complete The Plastics. The Summer I Turned Pretty sensation, Christopher Briney is starring as Aaron Samuels, and Mahi Alam of American Born Chinese shall play Kevin G.
But the familiar faces don’t end there. Jenna Fischer, former The Office star, will play Cady’s mother, Mrs. Heron; Jon Hamm of Mad Men will be seen as Coach Carr; and Connor Ratliff is joining as a new teacher called Mr. Rapp as unveiled in the Mean Girls Dateline episode. ’00’s romantic comedy darling Busy Phillips will be playing Mrs. George, Regina’s mom.
Topping it off, Emily in Paris star Ashley Park, one of the original Broadway cast members, has joined the group in a new role as Madame Park, a teacher.
Keep a Lookout for Some Fun Cameos
That’s right! Comedian Tim Meadows is returning as Principal Duval, while Tina Fey, the creator of Mean Girls, will play Ms. Norbury. Early in 2023, Fey verified the information in a Late Night with Seth Meyers interview.
