Two Big Fantasy Shows Will Make an Even Bigger Year for Amazon Prime

Two Big Fantasy Shows Will Make an Even Bigger Year for Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime Video has gathered a massive subscriber base. And for good reason, too! Who doesn’t like on-demand video streaming? Especially with an abundance of great content to binge on. Netflix has undoubtedly been a trailblazer in the world of on-demand streaming. But Amazon Prime has closed the gap over recent years. The Amazon Prime Video library is home to some of the most iconic movies and TV shows (including both reruns and Amazon Original content). And things may just be about to get even better for Prime Video subscribers.

With the might of the largest e-Commerce platform in the world behind it, Prime Video has accumulated a high-quality content library. And with enough funds to pour into production and animation, there is very little that Prime Video cannot accomplish in terms of creating original content. For Prime Video subscribers who have a taste for the fantasy genre, two huge titles are coming up. Read up to find out more.

One Platform to Watch Them All

JRR Tolkien’s masterwork “The Lord of The Rings” has endured almost a century since the first release. The series was originally intended as a sequel to Tolkien’s first attempt at high fantasy, The Hobbit. Both LOTR and The Hobbit evolved into trilogies on the big screen. With Peter Jackson at the helm, the three installments in The Lord of The Rings was an acclaimed success. And it reigns to this day as arguably the best book-to-screen adaptation in any genre. The Hobbit trilogy followed soon after. While not as big a success as the original LOTR films, the trilogy had a decent showing. However, the LOTR fanbase soon resigned itself to not seeing any more of Tolkien’s great works onscreen.

Fortunately for true fans, Amazon Prime Video is not going to let that happen. The video streaming platform has not just announced a new Lord of The Rings TV show but has also hinted at its release date. Apparently, filming on the LOTR sets has been going on for some time. With a brief disruption in production schedules because of the pandemic, it seems the filming is right back on track. We don’t know about you, but the idea of a TV show seems appealing. It may be able to do more justice to the original books than even Peter Jackson could in a feature film format.

The Eye of a New World

The Lord of The Rings is arguably one of the first true high-fantasy works in history. And for a long time, it has acted as a gatekeeper into the genre. Anyone who likes high-fantasy likes the world of Middle Earth. But there are many later works as well that sit well with fantasy fans and fanatics alike. Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time is a massive piece of fantasy work. Sprawling across 14 volumes, a prequel, and two companion novels, it is one of the biggest and most comprehensive works in high fantasy to date.

Without giving too much away, Wheel of Time is unlike most high fantasy of its time. Instead of a singular protagonist (or group), the story has over 2,782 distinctly named characters. It would be a challenge to fit a justifiable storyline in a TV show. But Amazon seems to be up to the task. That’s right, Prime Video just announced an upcoming Wheel of Time adaptation. And it may drop a lot sooner than you think.
