Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man Remains One of Marvel’s Besting Casting Decisions: Here’s Why

Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man Remains One of Marvel’s Besting Casting Decisions: Here’s Why

By Hannah Hanson | September 30, 2021

Social media is rife with speculations about the possible return of Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in Tom Holland starer “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Marvel Studios recently dropped the first teaser of the film and boy did it broke the internet. The trailer confirms Marvel’s plans to expand upon the multiverse concept it has been building since phase 3.

We also see some notable nemesis of the wall-crawler including Dr. Otto Octavious aka Dr. Octorpus in the teaser. Alfred Molina who played the iconic villain in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 returns as the scientist-turned-supervillain. The trailer has led many to speculate that perhaps Maguire might also be making a comeback.

Marvel has neither denied the rumors nor confirmed them. While we wait for some sort of official confirmation or possible leaked footage (please internet) of the upcoming movie, let’s look at the reasons as to why Maguire remains one of Marvel’s finest casting to date.

He Has the Perfect Scream

We’ll start off with the best one. The way Tobey Maguire screams is just perfect. He just lets it all go. We can list countless scenes from the original Spider-Man trilogy that contains his screams. Whether it’s the train stop scene Spider-Man 2 or the final fight scene from Spider-Man 3, Maguire perfectly captures the intensity of each situation with his yells and screams. The way he yells “Eddddieeeee” while trying to stop Brock from bonding with the Venom symbiote is just great towards the end of Spider-Man 3 is just great.

He Embodies the Innocence of Peter Parker

Peter is socially awkward. He’s brilliant. But the most likable quality about him is his innocence. He’s a good kid who’s always looking to help others. Maguire perfectly captures the innocence of the shy and withdrawn teenager. He already had a boyish look when he starred in the first movie. Safe to say that he has retained that youthful appearance. While both Garfield and Holland have done a tremendous job with the character, none can match the innocence and intensity Maguire brings to the table.

He Is Great at Hiding Things

Norman Osborne (Willem Defoe) might disagree but Peter Parker is really good at keeping things a secret. His biggest secret is his superhero identity but Parker is also brilliant when it comes to hiding his feelings. He hides his feelings for Mary Jane (for the entirety of the first film, to say the least). He doesn’t even tell Harry about his father’s alter ego, the Green Goblin. In all, it is Maguire’s brilliant portrayal of the character that makes him such a convincing Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

He’s Got the Moves

We still can’t over the iconic dance moves that Tobey Maguire blessed us with in Spider-Man 3 (2007). Infected by the Venom symbiote, Parker became the ultimate cocky/arrogant/rude guy. He humiliated MJ, made Eddie Brock look like a fool, and destroyed his best friend Harry’s face (he just swung the pumpkin bomb back at him). But the greatest thing that came with the black suit was confidence. Thanks to the internet, we can see him killing it with those dance moves.

That was our take on Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. What do you think of his performance in the trilogy? What are you looking forward to the most in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
